How to Add DOIs to References?

Question:

When importing references from Google Scholar into my library, it didn’t load the DOI for any article/book.  The journal wants DOIs for every reference.  Can EndNote get these DOIs for me?  Is there an easy way to get the DOIs for my bibliography?

Answer:

The easier way to get DOIs or other missing information for your references in EndNote is to use the Find Reference Updates feature. Below are the steps to using that feature:

  • Open your EndNote library
  • Highlight the references for which you need DOIs
  • Under Reference menu, choose Find Reference Updates. It will match your records against those in PubMed. If a matching record is found, it will update your record with updates found in PubMed.

You may also find DOIs by searching PubMed directly from EndNote. References found from PubMed usually contain DOIs. You may keep this reference and delete the old one without DOI.
