How to Import References from Google Scholar into EndNote – Updated

June 27, 2012  – Yingting

To import references from Google Scholar into EndNote desktop, users need to configure the Google Scholar Settings first to make the “Import into EndNote” option available in Google Scholar search results. Here are the instructions:

  • Go to Google Scholar at http://scholar.google.com.
  • Click on the “Settings” link on the upper right corner in the screen.
  • On the “Scholar Settings” page, scroll down to the bottom. Under “Bibliography Manager”, click in the radio button next to “Show links to import citations into” and choose “EndNote” in the drop down menu.
  • Then click on the “Save” button in the lower right corner.
  • The “Import into EndNote” option will be shown Google Scholar search results screen.

Please follow the steps below to learn how to import references from Google Scholar into EndNote.

  • In Internet Explorer, perform a search in Google Scholar <http://scholar.google.com> .
  • At the desired reference, click on “Import into EndNote” link located right beneath the reference.
  • In the pop-up File Download window, click on the “Open” button.
  • The chosen reference will be automatically imported into your EndNote library.

Note: 1). If you have installed Zotero in your Firefox browser, please use Internet Explorer, because in Firefox, it will import the reference into Zotero if you do not disable automatic RIS/Refer import in the Zotero preferences. 2). Be aware that you can import only one reference at a time from Google Scholar into EndNote. Importing by batch is not feasible. 3). Not all the information in the reference can be imported. Fields like keywords and abstracts are not imported. Therefore, if the reference is available in PubMed or other databases, please import it from those resources to include more information in the record.
