How to Import References from CINAHL (EBSCO) into EndNote X4 for Mac?

December 7, 2010 – Yingting

Question: How to Import References from CINAHL (EBSCO) into EndNote X4 for Mac?

Answer: Below are the steps to follow for importing references from EBSCO CINAHL into your EndNote Library in Mac:

  • Perform a search in CINAHL
  • Select the desired references by clicking “Add to folder” beneath each citation. Note: You can’t select references in a batch but only by adding them one by one to the folder.
  • After all the needed references are added to the folder, click “Folder View” on the right column below the yellow header “Folder has items”
  • On the upper left corner above the references in Folder View, click in the box next to “Select / deselect all”
  • Click Export on the right
  • Under “Save citations to a file formatted for:”, click in the radio button next  to “Direct Export to End Note … “, then click on the Save button
  • In the “Opening delivery” window, click next to “Open with … “ and in the “Choose…” box, locate EndNote X4 by going through the Applications -> EndNote X4 folder -> EndNote X4 program and clicking the Open button.
  • Click on the OK button
  • The selected references should be automatically added into your EndNote Library

Why am I not able to import references from CINAHL to EndNote X4 for MAC?

Question: I am using EndNote X4 for MAC and Safari to try to import references from EBSCO’s CINAHL databases. But I can’t. Why am I not able to import the references?

Answer: According to the EndNote Technical Support, there are limitations of Safari in working with EndNote. Based on our test with Safari in MAC for EndNote X4, we noticed that: 1) it is not possible to export references from EBSCO’s CINAHL & ASP directly or indirectly into EndNote; 2) searching PubMed directly from EndNote is possible; 3) it is not possible to export references DIRECTLY from OvidSP Medline but able to do so INDIRECTLY.

To avoid these problems, we recommend using Firefox for working with EndNote X4 for MAC. If you have any question regarding EndNote for MAC, please contact your campus librarians for help.

Importing References from EBSCOHost CINAHL

References can be directly exported from EBSCOHost CINAHL to EndNote either individually on in groups.  To export multiple references save the references to the “Folder” EBSCOHost provides for printing/saving/emailing multiple references.  Note, when you log off CINAHL or close the browser window the references in the “Folder” will be deleted.  Click the Add to Folder link at the bottom of each reference or in the details pop-up window to save the reference to the Folder.  To add all the references from a search click the Add link located next to the Sort drop down menu located above and to the right of the list of references.

To access the references in the Folder use the link on the right hand side of your screen labeled Go to: Folder View.  Either check the checkbox to the left of each reference to select it, or check the Select/Deselect All checkbox to select all the references in the Folder.  Once the appropriate references have been checked click the Export link/icon located above the first reference.  It’s the icon with the arrow pointing to the right.  If you are in the detail view for an individual reference the Export link/icon is also located above and to the right of the reference.  Using the Export link/Icon in the detailed view will export only the reference being viewed.

On the next screen use the check box labeled Remove these items from folder after saving if you want to delete the references from the Folder after exporting them.  Make sure the Direct Export to EndNote, ProCite, or Reference Manager radio button is selected and click Save.

EndNote will launch automatically if it is not open.  References will be exported to the open EndNote Library, or if no Library is open you will be asked to select the Library you want your references sent to.
